This story is about a journey of the heart over five generations of the Porter family extending into the transformation of the landscape and the community. It includes the local Indigenous Australians of this time and the stone records of their people.
The story begins with the chance discovery of the first substantial mineral deposit in Western Australia, which occurred in 1848 adjacent to what would become the Porter's property. The characters and the mining and rural settlement adventures that follow make up the bulk of the book.
Galena was found in the lead mines around the Porter family farm and gave its name to the mine and township. Galena was situated on the Murchison River in the Geraldton Mid West region. About three km west of Galena are the remains of the Geraldine Mine. (introduction)
