Set in the mid-west of Western Australia in the late 1800s to mid-1900s, A Matriarch and the Murchison traces the life of a woman who succeeded in a male-centric world.

A competent and skilled businesswoman, Mary Augusta Gill was born in an era and achieved in an era in which women were not entitled to be in business, let alone succeed. It was an era that had been such that a woman could not own land, could not sign cheques, and could not vote. (Trove)

Emmett Michael Gill, who was the owner of the Wurarga Hotel, operated the Pindar Hotel as well as the local store. Known locally as the Pindar Pub, the hotel was the focal point for the small town. It was frequented by residents, travellers, teamsters, railway and station employees, pastoral station workers and sandalwood cutters. Following Emmett Gill's death the Pindar Hotel was transferred to his widow Mary Augusta Gill and then to her son. (Heritage Council of WA)
