Private Arthur Stanley Gurney was born in Day Dawn, Western Australia, in 1908. He finished his education at Stott's Business College and worked at Perth City Electricity and Gas Department.
He could play any sport, but his first love was cycling. He became a proficient amateur, then professional, road racing cyclist and also played a significant role in cycle club and cycle league administration.
In 1940, he volunteered for the AIF and fought in North Africa, where he was killed while consecutively storming three enemy machine gun posts. He was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his gallant act. (back cover)
