When Mate Alac, aged 18, left his small village on the Dalmatian coast in 1926 to emigrate to Western Australia, he believed he was coming to a land where an easy fortune could be made. What he found in Australia was vastly different. He worked as a sleeper cutter in the South West and as a miner and copper prospector in the eastern goldfields. He also served in WWII.
