The son of Edgar Charles and Ella Evelyn Witton, Bert Witton's family history came to an abrupt end on the evening of 19th November 1941 when he went down with his ship HMAS Sydney when it was sunk with all hands off the northern coast of Western Australia.
This diary, along with his photographs, had been handed over to his new wife, Norma, in February 1941 for safekeeping for when he would eventually return home.
It is all we now know of this brave young man, but by referencing his naval service documents, some more of his story can be pieced together. This is his story. (Foreword)
