The Flower Hunter was initially published in 1898 under the title A Flower Hunter in Queensland and New Zealand. It is a fascinating account of Ellis Rowan's travels, documenting the difficult conditions and the dangers she faced in pursuing new species of wildflowers to paint.
Ellis Rowan travelled to Queensland in 1887 and 1891 to visit friends and paint. It is from the second trip that the letters to her husband reproduced in this book derive, although incidents and experiences from her first trip in 1887 are incorporated. The New Zealand letters are from a trip Rowan made in 1893.
This engrossing story of a courageous woman also presents a revealing portrait of colonial life in Australia.
