Lieutenant W H Ross wrote this history of HMAS Sydney. Ross joined the cruiser when she was commissioned new in September 1935 and left her on transfer only a few days before she set off from Fremantle on her last passage.
On 19 November 1941, HMAS Sydney encountered the German merchant ship Kormoran on the Western Australian coast. The Australian cruiser was severely damaged and rapidly sank. The battle resulted in 645 Australian lives lost.
