While European settlement of this area of the Mid West of Western Australia began in the 1840s, local government didn't arrive until 1868, when a few select residents were given a say in local government after the then Governor appointed district Road Committees to report on rural roads. Previously, the Crown handled communication and infrastructure, represented locally by a Resident Magistrate based in Geraldton. (Introduction)
