Despite its comparatively short history of white settlement, the map of Australia is spattered with the names of towns that are now only a handful of ruins or less than that.
Some were killed when gold petered out. Some languished when lack of rain and erosion forced farmers off the surrounding marginal lands. And some just died.
Towns in Australia that by 1965 had died. These include Waukaringa, Hammond, Thackaringa, Silverton, Mount Gipps, Milparinka, Tibooburra, Innamincka, Tallangatta, Clunes, Pipeclay, Hill End, Port Douglas, Bloomfield River, Cooktown, Palmer River, Croydon, Karumba, Burketown, Borroloola, Port Essington, Halls Creek and Port Arthur.
