Some were killed when gold petered out. Some languished when lack of rain and erosion forced farmers off the surrounding marginal lands. And some just died.

These include Waukaringa, Hammond, Thackaringa, Silverton, Mount Gipps, Milparinka, Tibooburra, Innamincka, Tallangatta, Clunes, Pipeclay, Hill End, Port Douglas, Bloomfield River, Cooktown, Palmer River, Croydon, Karumba, Burketown, Borroloola, Port Essington, Halls Creek and Port Arthur.
