Despite its comparatively short history of white settlement, the map of Australia is dotted with the names of towns that are now only a handful of ruins or less.
Some were killed when gold petered out. Some languished when a lack of rain and erosion forced farmers off the surrounding marginal lands. And some just died.
Towns in Australia that had ceased to exist by the 1970s include: Waukaringa, Hammond, Thackaringa, Silverton, Mount Gipps, Milparinka, Tibooburra, Innamincka, Tallangatta, Clunes, Pipeclay, Hill End, Port Douglas, Bloomfield River, Cooktown, Palmer River, Croydon, Karumba, Burketown, Borroloola, Port Essington, Halls Creek and Port Arthur.
