Fremantle is named after Captain Charles Fremantle of HMS Challenger, who claimed Western Australia for the British. The colony's oldest surviving building stands near the spot where Fremantle landed, and the entire area is steeped in history dating back to the colony's earliest days.
In this book, Kirwan Ward describes the origins and developments of twenty-nine of Fremantle's most significant buildings and other features, accompanied by Bruce Wroth's sketches.
