Towards the end of his medical career, in 1924 Dr West sailed overseas to the south west corner of Western Australia to bring his skills, dedication and perseverance to a remote and isolated practice over 30 square kilometres in size which, on his arrival, had only one store with the town, hospital and roads yet to be built.

His patients were the British pioneers of the Group Settlement Scheme, who with about 1500 children, had been promised farms of their own once they had felled some of the world’s tallest forests set amongst impenetrable undergrowth.
