George Garder was born in Pingelly in 1912. As many families did, George's family struggled during the 1930s Depression and George describes the family fishing, cutting firewood, keeping chooks and growing vegetables to make the best of it.
In 1943, after working in many locations, George settled in Northcliffe. His passionate interest in the ecology of the south-west, particularly flora, earned him recognition from professional botanists. He was awarded an AO for his contribution to the environment and his local community.
His autobiography adds to the social history of rural life in Western Australia in the first half of the twentieth century. (Introduction and back cover)
