The Avon Valley was settled shortly after the Swan River Colony. Ensign Robert Dale (1810-1853) was one of the first Europeans to explore the area, naming it after the Avon district in England.

The buildings described and sketched in this volume are from Toodyay, Northam, York and Beverley.
