Walkinshaw Cowan (1808-1888) arrived at the Swan River Colony aboard the Brothers in early 1839 as private secretary to Governor Hutt. He subsequently became private secretary to Governors Irwin, Clarke and Fitzgerald. He was also Clerk of Councils for many years. In 1848, he was appointed Native Protector at York; he later served as a Magistrate in York.
