Based on Ian Berryman's extensive study of British and colonial newspapers, this book is in two parts. The first part is an essay detailing the reaction in Britain to the first news from the Swan River Colony.
The main part of the book contains annotated transcripts of over one hundred letters and reports from colonists that were published in contemporary newspapers and pamphlets. Correspondents include James Stirling, William Stirling, Alexander Collie, Thomas Hester, C D Ridley, James Purkins, Alfred Stone and John and Joseph Hardey.
