Barak was born in 1823 and was about twelve years of age when John Batman arrived at Port Phillip to trade with the local Aboriginal people. for land. Barak was present with his father, the old chief Jerum Jerum, when the Batman Treaty was signed.

His lifetime spanned the early settlement of Melbourne, the difficulties of integration, the opening up of vast tracts of land by the pastoralist, the discovery of gold, the growth of prosperity and the rapid development of the city.

He witnessed the loss of his tribal lands and the extinction of his people. He dies in August 1903 when the wattles were in full bloom. (back cover)
