With the entry of Japan into WWII in 1941, Australia's situation was suddenly far more precarious than it had been hitherto. The Volunteer Defence Corps (VDC) in Western Australia consisted of sixteen battalions and was commanded fr the most part by Colonel W B Robinson. It covered the state from Meekathara to Albany and from Parth to the Goldfields.
In the event of a Japanese landing near Perth, there was a coordinated plan to attack them from the flank and push inland. It was the VDC's responsibility to employ scorched-earth and guerrilla-warfare tactics and deny the enemy as much as possible.
So it was in this situation that some seven hundred men from the Central Wheatbelt offered their services to Australia in the 15th Battalion VDC. They were mainly manpower farmers, but included others from all walks of country life. (Introduction)
