The Mighty Midgets - the Royal Australian Navy's World War II corvette fleet still generates respect and affection among those who sailed them. Their role in Australia's sea war was vital, and the men who sailed on them formed lasting bonds with each other.

Sixty corvettes rolled off Australia's wartime slipways. Four went to the Indian Navy. Fremantle saw 39 of the remaining 56.

These photographs are from the archives of The West Australian, from negatives still held. The anecdotes come from the corvetteers from individuals and associations around Australia. Other stories are from Bruce Farrington's book.
