In 1964, the Government of Western Australia passed the Museum Amendment Act to address historic shipwrecks in Western Australian waters. The Act gave the Western Australian Museum the power to recover, preserve and display wrecks. It allowed the Museum to take possession in 1964 of the wreck of the Dutch East Indies Vergulde Draeck (Gilt Dragon).
In January 1972, a full-scale excavation began. This report presents excavation findings, accompanied by a historical background.
Western Australian Museum Information Series No. 5. Includes a newspaper article dated 1 July 1978 showing images of treasures from the wreck.
