Malcolm Barker was born in Perth in 1930. His grandfather and father were editors of the North West Echo, which ceased in 1930. In the 1970s, Malcolm Barker and his mother visited Broome and were shown his father's printing press that had been in storage since the 1930s by Sam Male.
With the assistance of the Broome Shire, the press was sent to Malcolm in Perth, where it was restored and used to print Christmas cards before being displayed in the Broome Museum.
