This memoir was written on Norfolk Island in 1842 by James Porter, who was sent to the island prison from Van Diemans Land after a sentence of death incurred for the piracy of the Frederick from Macquarie Harbour in 1834 was set aside.

This is not the only version of Porter's story. In 1837, awaiting execution in Hobart Town Gaol, Port composed a shorter version of the seizure of the Frederick. This was later published in an edited form in the Hobart Almanack of 1838 and 1981 as The Capture of the Frederick.

Further renditions of Porter's tale appeared in Scotland and Canada, and in For the Term of His Natural Life, Marcus Clarke makes free use of Porter's narrative in his account and capture of the Osprey. (Introduction)
