We've included convict stories under true crime, even though many convicts were sent to Australia for minor crimes. Between 1788 and 1868, more than 162,000 convicts were transported to Australia. (National Museum Australia). They were primarily English and Welsh, but nearly 25% were Irish, some Fenian political prisoners. The most common crimes committed by convicts were theft, including pickpocketing, shoplifting, stealing livestock, highway robberies and housebreaking. Far less common was manslaughter, murder or rape.
