The Guardians of the Gate: A Story of the Serbs (1918) was originally a series of lectures on Serbian history given by the British historian R.G.D. LAFFAN (1887-1972) to the British Army Service Corps, that was attached to the Serbian Army during World War I.
The lectures cover Serbian history from ancient times and the medieval empire through to the 19th-century struggle for liberation from Ottoman rule, the Balkan Wars, and the immense hardships of World War I.
Laffan wrote these lectures to counteract anti-Serbian sentiment and propaganda prevalent at the time, which often portrayed Serbs unfavourably through German or Austro-Hungarian sources.
