A comprehensive history of the first 70 years of European settlement in the Murray district, 60km south of Perth.
The land around the Murray River was one of the earliest parts of the colony to be settled, with the first significant grant of land made to Thomas Peel.
The book details the area before settlement, the establishment of the district and tensions between the early settlers and local Aborigines which led to what became known as the battle of Pinjarra.
Chapters cover the successes and failures learnt by early colonists and pioneering families, the depression of the 1840s and the rise of pastoralism, gold discoveries and timber-milling.
The book also incorporates a dozen maps and over 100 photographs and old advertisements and articles, with an extensive index and bibliography.
