Mary Carter, who later became Ma Thomas and finally Mary Raine, made her fortune from Perth real estate. She is best known for acquiring the Wentworth Hotel, United Service Hotel and the Windsor Hotel.
In the mid-1950s, the Raine's contributed to an appeal to launch a medical school at the University of Western Australia. When her husband, Arnold 'Joe' Yeldham Raine, died, Mary contributed again by establishing the Arnold Yeldham & Mary Raine Medical Research Foundation.
On her death, Mary bequeathed the bulk of her estate to the Foundation, bringing her legacy to nearly £1 million.
