Peter remembers; “Mr Lishman conversed with me in a manner which as a seventeen-year-old I had not experienced before. He was factual, friendly and very reassuring. Post-operation was traumatic to say the least, with large portions of my leg removed and extensive plastic surgery. Mr Lishman saw me regularly. He opened up about his work while trekking in the Himalayas and much more. I believe that he was trying to show me a wider world to look forward to as I was probably shell shocked."
The Man in the Surgical Mask is a biography of Dr Val Lishman’s life. Dr Lishman was not only a fine surgeon but an adventurer and athlete. He was the medical officer on Himalayan and Antarctic expeditions and was very much involved with Surf Life Saving. The first specialist surgeon to practice outside of Perth, he was pioneering in many ways. He also had great humility and was much loved and respected both for his work and for his personal kindness.
