Book Description

Secondhand. Good condition. Wear to book corners and edges. Interior and binding are still very good.

The colourful and chequered history of Mount Claremont began over a century ago. Dr Sydney Montgomery founded the 400-acre site in 1903, creating Perth's first purpose-built hospital to care for people with a mental illness. Originally known as Claremont Mental Hospital for the Insane, its name changed in 1934 to Claremont Mental Hospital, and again in 1967 to Claremont Hospital. Claremont Hospital closed in 1972, reopening immediately as two separate hospitals: Swanbourne and Graylands.

Since the mid 1980s, the beautifully crafted central buildings have remained abandoned. In 2021, Aegis Aged Care saw potential to redevelop the site into a premium aged care residence.

This book follows the fascinating history from the hospital's beginnings through the restoration process.
