Thomas Hentry, a leading Merino stud breeder in Sussex, England, sent three of his seven sons to seek a selection in the new Swan River Colony. Disappointed and disillusioned, the sons moved on to Van Diemen's Land but were too late to secure a land grant.

Undaunted, the sons continued to seek suitable land. In 1834, Edward Henty finally located rich tracts at Port Phillip District, Colony of New South Wales. He and several of his brothers engaged in grazing, whaling, and wool growing. Three other brothers had successful lives in Tasmania, establishing themselves in business, law, banking, and politics.
