The story of Arthur Raymond Tonkin, who battled to reach university as a mature student. He completed a degree and a teaching qualification. In 1971, Arthur won the Legislative Assembly seat of Mirrabooka for the Australian Labor Party. He served in the Burke Government as minister for several portfolios, including Labour and Industry, Consumer Affairs, Urban Development, Water Resources and Electoral Reform. His time in parliament was never dull, as he was prepared to stand up for what he believed both within and without the Labor Party. (Trove)
