In 1899, the crew on the resupply pearl lugger Ethel, operating out of Broome, mutinied. Captain John Reddell, his young son and several other crew members were murdered. The mutineers scuttled the ship at Selaru Island. Ending up in Macassar, they were deported and sent to Perth. Four mutineers were executed at Fremantle Prison, two served life sentences and one man was acquitted.
