The district of Melville takes its name from Melville Water, which James Stirling named in 1827 during his first visit to the Swan River. (Chapter 1).
The purpose of this book is to record the dramatic development of the district and to unfold the human story of the people who were pioneers of Melville and often, under difficult circumstances, laid the foundations of the progress that followed. (Preface)
