Not as well known as Francis Greenway, Edmund Thomas Blacket (1817-1883) was one of Australia's most significant architects. Greenway's work, important as it was, extended over six years, and less than ten of his buildings remain. Edmund Blacket, on the other hand, worked in Australia for forty years, from 1843 to 1883, during which period he was Colonial Architect, private practitioner and important citizen.
Among the unnumbered buildings he designed are sections of the Universities of Sydney and Melbourne and four cathedrals, one of which is in Western Australia. He designed schools, hospitals, commercial buildings, lighthouses and nearly fifty churches.
After Edmund Blackets' death, his practice was carried on by future generations of Blackets. (book flap)
