Nicholas Hasluck was born in Canberra in 1942. He studied law at the University of Western Australia and the University of Oxford. While practising law in Perth, he completed ten works of fiction, including The Bellarmine Jug, which won The Age Book of the Year Award in 1984.

Historical fiction is based in part on the adventures of the Dutch ship Batavia.
