As one of Australia's leading economists, Sir Douglas Copland (1894-1971) is probably more aware and articulate about the distinguishing characteristics of Australia's high rate of growth and its economic, social and political implications than any other public man.
The book is a collection of recent papers in which he makes a searching examination of the Australian economy in its world setting during a time of rapid growth at home and abroad, and almost bewildering change in the world scene as a whole.
His main argument is that the capacity to meet new situations, take calculated risks in the task of development, and be aware of the basic changes in the world's political structure is essential to success. He also brings many fresh and vigorous ideas to the work that skilled administrators must do in handling the problems of growth.
The book, published under the auspices of the Australian Administrative Staff College Association, concludes with an account of the work of the College by Mr T J Dwyer, who was a session member.
