In the 10 years preceding the onset of the 1930s Depression, the foundations of Australia's industrial economy were laid. The decade marks a turning point in Australian economic development: helped by the Commonwealth Government's policies, new manufacturing industries were established and old industries were transformed.
Dr Forster has made a detailed study of the growth and development of some of the leading industries - motor vehicles, cement, textiles, electrical equipment, iron and steel - and the general problems they faced, problems associated with the supply of capital, labour and technology that arose in the special circumstances of the Australian economy.
