While searching in England for relics of the famous ornithologist John Gould and his assistant, John Gilbert, Alec Chisholm discovered Gilbert's diaries, in particular one containing a detailed account of Ludwig Leichhardt's expedition of 1844-45 from Brisbane to Port Essington, which Gilbert accompanied.
For the first time, an unbiased narrative of the remarkable journey was available. Drawing on the diary, Alec Chisholm has been able to put Leichhardt's fantastic story into clearer perspective. The character of the man is analysed and checked against the comments of his companions on two expeditions.
In this revised edition, new material has been added, including a summary of the numerous attempts to solve the riddle of Leichhardt's disappearance. (book flap)
