The fascinating biography of Major General Alan Stretton. Major General Alan Bishop Stretton AO CBE (1922-2012) was a former senior Australian Army officer. He came to public prominence through his work in the cleanup efforts at Darwin in the aftermath of Cyclone Tracy.
The book details his active service in World War II, the Malayan Emergency, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War and focuses on his role as the Director-General of the Natural Disasters Organisation, where he managed the largest peacetime relief operation in Australian history, overseeing the evacuation of approximately 36,000 people from Darwin.
He was jointly named the 1975 Australian of the Year, with Sir John Cornforth. He is a former Deputy Director of the Joint Intelligence Organisation and member of the National Intelligence Committee, and was also a professional AFL footballer for St Kilda!
