Edward Bertram Johnston (1880-1942) was born in Geraldton and educated at Hale School. He made his fortune in farming in the Wheatbelt and hotel investments but nearly lost it all in a battle with the Tax Department.
Between 1911 and 1942, Bertie Johnston served in the Western Australian Legislative Assembly for 17 years and in the Australian Senate for 13 years. Originally a member of the Labor Party, he was instrumental in defeating the Scaddan Labor Government and later joined the Country Party.
