Recherche Bay has played an important but often unheralded role in the history of Tasmania and, indeed, Australia. For the first time in one book, this frequently surprising history is presented. It takes us from the first friendly encounters between the European and Aboriginal people, the French d'Entrecasteaux expedition, to tales of mutiny and piracy which seized the attention of the European press and were popularised on the London stage.
The colonial heritage of the bay is also amply recorded and provides a wealth of detail for research into the history of the local families.
The bay has gained international prominence in recent years due to the rediscovery of a French garden from 1792.
