May Gibbs (1877-1969), children's author and illustrator, whose work has been acclaimed worldwide, created her lovable storybook characters from the flora and fauna of the Australian bush.
Her formative years were spent in Western Australia, first at Harvey and then in Perth. Her best-known works, The Gumnut Babies and Snugglepot and Cuddlepie, were also based entirely on her experiences in the West.
The book provides background on her emergence as a writer and illustrator. It also celebrates the unique beauty of the Western Australian bush. (Introduction)
