This is the first radical history of capitalism in Australia. The authors trace its evolution from colonial prison to the 1980's vortex of international finance.
The book takes readers from the beginnings as a prison farm, to the consolidation of pastoral capitalism, the growth of an organised working class and the emergence of manufacturing industries. It covers such topics as the expropriation of the Indigenous Australians, police state based forced labour, colonial ruling class of graziers and merchants, the rise of the bourgeoisie, the making of the Australian working class and the position of women in capitalist society.
The book's cover is a reproduction of a postcard The Pyramid of Capitalism published in Cleveland, Ohio, 1911.
