Alec Phillips migrated from Wales, aged nineteen, in 1921. After working briefly on several farming properties, he took up farming a virgin block in the Kojonup district.
For some years he alternated between working as a surveyor in the far north during the dry season and returning during lay-ups to work on and invest his earnings in his property.
In the first half of this book, Philipps recounts his adventures in the Kimberley, Gascoyne and Goldfields. The second half focuses on the gruelling work of farming his farm in Kojonup. (back cover)
