Melton is 35km north-west of Melbourne, on the road to Ballarat. Although several pastoralists had founded runs there earlier, Melton township had its beginnings as a campsite for travellers making for the goldfields.

Although early plans prepared by J H Wedge at the time of the Batman Treaty in 1835 contain references to the area, Surveyor William Wedge Darke is almost certainly the first person to have actually mapped the district in 1827.

Melton Shire was proclaimed on March 24, 1871. Over time, it has gained and lost area to surrounding districts.
