Loraine Coates has been collecting since childhood, for example, cereal cards, playing cards, stamps and marbles. Later, in the 1960s, her passion was to collect smoking pipes, ashtrays, tobacco tins and jars. By the 1980's she was collecting early Victorian English blue and white porcelain, late Victorian glass, kitchenalia and advertising objects. In the 2000s, her collecting changed, and she started collecting tins, mainly Arnotts, including vintage tins.

Lorraine has been concentrating on research about tins and their history, which gave her the incentive to write this book on the factories that existed in 1900 in Perth. (back cover)
