Born in the UK in 1909 and moving to New Zealand with his family in 1920, Pat Sykes spent his working life with Cable & Wireless (and associated companies) in many countries in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, never living more than two years in the same place.

During his long life of travelling, he maintained detailed diaries, and his mother retained his many letters to her. These diaries and letters, and Pat's ready wit and sense of humour, have provided an interesting insight into his life from the mid-1920s until his retirement in 1964. (Trove)
