An affectionate first-hand account of life as it was in the mill towns of the South-west of Western Australia.

In the first decade of the 19th Century, numerous sawmills were established along the Darling Range to exploit the hardwoods of the jarrah forests. Small communities built up around the mills, made up of the millhands and bush workers (jarrah jerkers) and their families.

Lewis and Reid's No 2 Mill, described in the booklet, was typical of the mills of that era. Edward and Jean Trautmann who lived and worked at the mill provide us with a detailed and amusing description of the life there, from the mill's beginning in 1913 to its closure in the mid-twenties during the slump that followed the First World War.
