Australia was first inhabited by Aborigines. It is therefore appropriate that knowledge about culture, languages, and the history of traditional Aboriginal societies should be encouraged. An appreciation and understanding of the complexity and diversity of Aboriginal societies will encourage a respect for Aboriginality in modern Australia and develop a more positive attitude among all Australians towards Aboriginal people. (Foreword)
In the Beginning: A Perspective on Traditional Aboriginal Societies was used to introduce the teaching of Aboriginal Studies in Western Australian schools.
