Sir George Grey (1812-1898) was a British soldier, explorer, colonial governor, and writer. He led two expeditions in north west Australia, publishing his account in his two-volume work, Journal of Two Expeditions of Discovery in North-West and Western Australia During the Years 1837, 38, and 39, in 1841.
He briefly served as resident magistrate at King George Sound, marrying Sir Richard Spencer's daughter Eliza Lucy. From 1841 to 1845, Grey was the Governor of South Australia. In late 1845, Grey left Australia, first for New Zealand and then South Africa and was highly influential in the development of both settlements.
