Gwelup, the Indigenous name for a lakes area 12 kms north of Perth, was formerly the home of the Indigenous Mooro people. The first British settlers were allocated vast tracts in Gwelup upon the arrival of Governor James Stirling in 1829. Later, these were taken up by those prepared to take on the challenges of farming this swampy terrain.
These yarns were developed over more than a year of research and discussion with those who had lived in the area for much of their lives, revealing fascinating connections. They also reveal Gwelup's role in developing the multicultural community we celebrate today.
